Is there gas in the tank? If so, is the tank vent open? This may be fishing line, excessive seaweed, or some other material that’s worked its way around the blades. Carefully remove anything that may be wrapped around the propeller, and give it a once-over for any damage that may be present. If the propeller is damaged, it needs to be replaced. Debris around the propeller is the most likely culprit if your boat motor starts, but quickly dies.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eTry to start the engine both with and without using the choke. If this doesn’t work, try altering the throttle position. Applying more or less gas can sometimes do the trick. If this is true for your battery, make sure the switch is on. Then, if your engine is under 25HP, you may be able to use the emergency cord to pull-start. It’s possible to do this with up to a 50HP engine, but be aware that the higher the HP, the more difficult this will be. If this works, the battery is likely the issue. The scope of this service will only include the low-pressure fuel filter and fuel water separator if applicable by model. Mercury recommends that owners do not service their high-pressure fuel filters. Depending on your engine model, the water separator filter (or castle filter) may be removed by using a wrench, standard tools, and a little caution. Unplug the water-in-fuel sensor if applicable and spin the cap off of the housing. Replace the filter element with a fresh one, lube the o-ring with grease or oil, and carefully reinstall the cap.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eFor most other models, the low-pressure fuel filter is inline where the fuel supply line passes down the side of the cowling. On applicable models, locate the Schrader valve on the fuel system. Cover the valve with a rag or towel and depress the valve stem to vent the pressure from the system before service.
