A four-stroke engine works by running one compression stroke followed by an exhaust stroke. Each stroke is followed quickly by a return stroke.

Mercury Marine have developed 4-stroke outboards that weigh and perform comparably with 2-stroke outboards. Mercury Outboards, 30 Hp and less, are made by Tohatsu in Japan. Mercury ProKicker outboard motors deliver superior torque for greater acceleration control. The large 21.4-cubic-inch displacement powerhead of the Mercury 15hp EFI develops plenty of low-end torque, making it an excellent source of power. The 2.5 HP Mercury outboard motor weighs in at just 38 pounds and offers portable four-stroke power for aluminum tillers, inflatable soft hulls, jon boats, utilities, and sail boats. The Mercury 2.5hp outboard models are lightweight, compact, and powerful.
