Hi. I have a 16 foot Bayliner with 2002 Merc 50 HP 2 stroke. Looking to upgrade to Seastar hydraulic steering. I will need 14’ hoses. Not seeing a kit that fits my needs. Can you help me with the parts needed to knock this out?

Hi Chris,
Thank you for reaching out! In this case, we’d recommend contacting SeaStar Solutions directly for confirmation on the exact components needed for your setup. Hydraulic steering kits can vary depending on the specific boat and engine configuration, and we’d rather not risk steering you wrong with an incorrect recommendation. Once you confirm the correct kit and hose length with SeaStar, feel free to check availability with us—we’ll be happy to help get everything ordered for you. We apologize we can’t give a 100% accurate parts list right now, but this will ensure you get the perfect fit for your Bayliner.
Best Regards Markine
I have a Merc 150 4 stroke and want to convert it to hydraulic steering with a hydraulic linkage to my starboard mounted merc 9.9 prokicker. What would I need?
Helm pump (e.g., HH5271-3 or similar) * Hydraulic hoses (length depends on your setup) * SeaStar front mount cylinder (most likely HC5345-3 for Mercury 150hp 4-stroke) 2. Kicker Tie-Bar Linkage Kit SeaStar offers a ProKicker tie-bar kit to hydraulically link the main engine to the kicker. * You’ll want the SeaStar Kicker Tie-Bar Kit that matches your cylinder model and kicker mounting orientation (since it’s starboard-mounted). * Be sure to choose a compatible kicker steering bracket or adapter plate for clean installation. 3. Hydraulic Fluid & Bleed Kit SeaStar hydraulic fluid (HA5430 or equivalent) * Bleed/fill kit for proper system purging and setup A Few Tips: Verify your Mercury 150hp uses the HC5345-3 cylinder (standard for most post-2010 models). * Make sure your kicker is compatible with a tie-bar system — some ProKicker brackets may need a steering bracket upgrade. * If unsure, SeaStar’s tech support or a marine installer can help confirm fitment based on your boat’s layout.———

Hi Rick, Great question! To convert your Mercury 150 4-stroke to hydraulic steering and link it to your starboard-mounted Mercury 9.9 ProKicker, you’ll need a few key components to set up a SeaStar hydraulic steering system with a kicker tie-bar linkage. 🔧 Here’s what you’ll typically need: 1. SeaStar Hydraulic Steering Kit for the 150hp
Feel free to reach out with your boat’s make/model or more specifics at partsvu@partsvu.com, and I can help fine-tune the parts list

I have a 1996 Johnson fast strike 115, which sea star would you recommend?

PartsVu replied:
Hi Joshua,
For your 1996 Johnson Fast Strike 115HP, the recommended SeaStar hydraulic steering cylinder would typically be the SeaStar HC5345-3 Front Mount Cylinder, paired with the SeaStar HK6400A-3 Hydraulic Steering Kit for a complete system. However, it’s always best to confirm compatibility with SeaStar’s official fitment guide or consult with a marine technician to ensure the correct setup for your boat.
Let us know if you have any other questions—we’re happy to help!
Best regards,
Markine
Hello I have a 1997 Johnson Evinrude 115 hp motor and has hydraulic steering on it the cylinder number is hc5342, with that being said I’m upgrading to a 2008 mercury 115 optimax can you tell me is there a kit I can buy to make that cylinder work on the mercury so I don’t have to buy whole new cylinder?

Hello Nathan,
It’s great to hear that you’re upgrading your boat motor! As for your question, when switching from a 1997 Johnson Evinrude 115 hp to a 2008 Mercury 115 Optimax, compatibility between the SeaStar hydraulic steering system and the new motor’s steering cylinder is crucial. The HC5342 steering cylinder is designed specifically for certain outboard motors, but it may not directly match the mounting and steering geometry of the Mercury 115 Optimax.
Unfortunately, there isn’t typically a one-size-fits-all “kit” to make an older steering cylinder like the HC5342 work seamlessly with a newer motor. However, you have a couple of options:
1. Adapting the Cylinder to the New Motor: Some manufacturers, including SeaStar, offer mounting kits and adapters that might allow you to mount your current HC5342 cylinder on the new Mercury motor. These kits would include the necessary parts to adapt the cylinder’s mounting points and might involve changing or modifying hoses and fittings to ensure everything matches. 2. Upgrading the Steering Cylinder: If the Mercury 115 Optimax requires a different type of cylinder, it might be more cost-effective in the long run to replace the steering cylinder with a model that is specifically designed for the Mercury motor. SeaStar and other brands often offer compatible cylinders for a wide range of outboard engines.I recommend contacting SeaStar or your local dealer to confirm if any adapter kits are available for your existing cylinder. They might also be able to suggest a more compatible cylinder if upgrading is the best route.
