Mercury Outboard Serial Number Lookup
Where can I find my Mercury outboard serial number is a question we’re asked all of the time because it is an essential piece of information when ordering parts for your outboard.
For Mercury outboard engines 8hp and higher, your engine serial number (ESN) tag can be found halfway down the transom assembly on the right (starboard) side, just below the engine’s powerhead.
For engines 6hp and lower, you can find your Mercury outboard serial number on the top of the swivel bracket. You may need to tilt the engine up and trim it to the left to see the ESN tag clearly.
We highly recommend you take a picture of your ESN tag and keep the photo on your mobile phone in case the tag becomes unreadable or if you need this information when you’re not near your boat.

What About a Mercruiser Serial Number?
On a Mercruiser sterndrive or inboard engine, typically, the tag is on the block near the starter. But, sometimes, it's down by the starter on the engine block, near the flywheel, or on the flame arrestor.
All too often, the ESN tag on a Mercruiser is not the easiest to find, so definitely take a picture and save it on your cell phone.

Why Do You Need to Know Your Mercury Serial Number?
Simply put, your Mercury serial number will allow you to identify and order the right parts for your engine model and year.
Mercury manufactures many, many different models and often variations of each model. While one thermostat might be the proper selection for some variations of a given engine model, there’s no guarantee that it will be compatible will all variations of that engine—knowing your Mercury serial number is the key.
As if matters weren’t confusing enough, sometimes Mercury will change an engine model design midway thru a given engine model year.
Therefore, Mercury Marine parts are often segmented by serial number ranges. Knowing your serial number will allow you to make sure that you are ordering the right parts, whether you are utilizing a Mercury engine schematic/Mercury outboard parts diagrams, the Mercury parts library, the complete list of Mercruiser parts library, or other resources.

Hello Mike,
Thank you for contacting PartsVu as we are happy to assist. I am sorry to say that when it comes to rigging with Mercury, there are too many variables that can lead us to give incorrect information. Unfortunately, since Mercury is extremely convoluted with their rigging and the information they supply, you will need to reach out to Mercury directly at 920-929-5040 for anything related to rigging. PartsVu does this so as to not be held accountable for parts that are ordered that may not work for your application. Once you have spoken to Mercury and received the needed information, we are more than happy to help with price and part availability.
