Yamaha Outboard Service Kits FAQ

How do you grease a Yamaha outboard engine?

Greasing your Yamaha outboard is an important part of keeping the motor functioning. A grease gun is an important part of maintaining your Yamaha outboard motor. To do this, you load a tube into the grease gun and use a trigger-activated plunger to slowly dispense the grease as needed into the grease points.

Grease points are metal fittings attached to your outboard motor that allow grease to be fed into the system under moderate to heavy pressure. Because you don’t have to remove most engine components to access the grease points, they’re easy to work with. To find grease points on your outboard, refer to your service manual for your particular Yamaha model outboard and add grease where grease “A” is specified.

How do you perform a Yamaha outboard leak-down test?

An outboard leak down test is a simple diagnostic checkup for your Yamaha outboard – and it can even be incorporated into your regular maintenance intervals for peace of mind.

A Yamaha outboard leak down test indicates the condition of each of the Yamaha engine’s cylinders and the overall condition of the motor. Similar to a compression test, it involves spraying compressed air into each cylinder and using a pressure gauge to measure a percentage of pressure that’s lost as compressed air after a short period.

Part of performing a leak down test on a your Yamaha outboard motor is to listen for any signs of leakage. By listening closely to each cylinder and the areas around them, you’ll better understand where leaks may be present.

  • Step #1: Carefully remove the top cowling, Then, remove the ignition coil cover at the rear of the motor.

  • Step #2: Remove the spark plugs

  • Step #3: Remove the flywheel cover from the top of the motor.

  • Step #4: Mark the flywheel with a marker at 0°, 120°, and 240°. These positions indicate where you’ll rotate each pair of cylinders to the top dead center positions (see Step #11 and #12 below).

  • Step #5: Rotate the crankshaft with your ratchet and socket to the top dead center for cylinder #1.

  • Step #6: Adjust the regulator on the leak down tester to 0% to calibrate it for an accurate reading.

  • Step #7: Connect the leak down tester by screwing into the spark plug port at cylinder #1. Next, connect the tester to the compressor and take a measurement. Be sure to firmly hold the crankshaft to prevent it from rotating.

  • Step #8: Rotate the crankshaft 360° (one full rotation) to put cylinder #4 at top dead center.

  • Step #9: Connect the leak down tester to cylinder #4. Then, take a measurement while holding the crankshaft to prevent it from rotating.

  • Step #10: Set cylinder #3 to top dead center at the 120° mark. Next, repeat step #7 through Step #10 for cylinders #3 and #6.

  • Step #11: Set cylinder #2 to top dead center at the 240° mark. Then, repeat step #7 through Step #10 for cylinders #2 and #5.

Step #12: Replacement is the same as disassembly. Be sure to replace spark plugs in numbered order and apply anti-seizing compound on the threads for easy removal/replacement in the future. Also, firmly reattach spark plugs to the ignition wires for a solid connection.

What are common Yamaha F115 4-stroke outboard problems?

The Yamaha F115 is an excellent 4-stroke outboard motor that consistently receives high marks for reliability, longevity, and performance. As with all marine outboard motors, with enough continual use and exposure to the elements, Yamaha outboard parts will begin to wear. Because of this, regular maintenance and servicing are required to keep this outboard motor in the water and out of the shop.

The following are 5 of the most common Yamaha F115 4-stroke outboard problems

  1. Faulty Head Gasket - Over time, the head gasket of your Yamaha F115 is regularly exposed to a number of elements that reduce its integrity, such as salt water, heat, fuel, and other substances. Once a head gasket fails, water and other contaminants will enter your engine. When it comes to Yamaha 115 4 stroke problems, replacing the head gasket should be a priority every 4 years of service, or sooner if usage exceeds the average boater (50 hours per season, or 200 hours for 4 years).

  2. Bad Fuel Pump - A bad Yamaha fuel pump is one of the most common problems for Yamaha 115 4-stroke outboards. When the fuel pump finally gives out, your motor is essentially dead in the water until it is fixed. Fortunately, bad outboard fuel pumps are easy to replace and repair. They’re also relatively inexpensive when compared to other necessary engine repairs.

  3. Clogged Fuel Injectors - Over time, carbon build-up clogs fuel injectors and prevents a smooth distribution of fuel. When carbon clogs the fuel injector, your outboard will often misfire, vibrate excessively, and bog down during idle or when the throttle is applied. Cleaning your outboard fuel injectors with fuel injector cleaner keeps clogging from occurring and your Yamaha outboard motor performing at its best.

  4. Clogged VST Filter - Regularly replacing your Yamaha 115 4-stroke’s VST filter prevents clogging. There are plenty of kits to help clean and/or replace your VST filter for proper fuel system maintenance. If this service isn’t performed regularly, your Yamaha outboard engine may require a more time-intensive and expensive repair.

  5. Trim and Tilt Problems - A faulty trim and tilt switch can prevent you from the fine-tuning (trim) and dramatic changes (tilt) needed for optimal performance of your Yamaha F115. Luckily, you can avoid these problems by swapping out the trim and tilt switch on your Yamaha outboard motor.

Why are there so many types of Yamaha outboard fuel filters?

The reason why there are so many Yamaha outboard fuel filters is rather simple– dirt comes in various shapes and sizes. Some dirt particles are larger, while others are essentially dust particles. Some materials you can easily see, other materials can be microscopic biological growth and may still be growing.

Dirt also takes different shapes. Some may be shaped like a ball, while others, like an arrow. Ball-shaped dust is typically caught easily, but the arrow type may penetrate the first and second filter and get stuck in the third. Once the arrow lays across the filtering medium, it partially closes the passage holes and makes them smaller, capturing even smaller debris. This leads to clogging. If the initial filter is restricted, the vacuum on the filter may suck the debris through it and on to the next filter, and so on.

Poor fuel quality, water, ethanol, lack of fuel rotation, and biological growth all add up to clogged Yamaha fuel filters. This is why it’s essential to change all Yamaha fuel filters on a regular basis based on factory guideline recommendations. Many of our Yamaha outboard service kits come with fuel filters to make the process simple.

Some Yamaha four-stroke outboard engines require several of the fuel filters below or screens to help prevent water and debris from getting inside the engine.

How do you perform a Yamaha outboard motor oil change?

Performing needed maintenance in a timely manner on your Yamaha outboard is the key to its overall longevity and reliability. Use one of our Yamaha outboard service kits to perform a quick and easy oil change on your Yamaha outboard.

Can I use a Yamaha F150 100 hour service kit in place of a Yamaha F250 100 hour service kit?

No, you should not use a Yamaha F150 100 hour service kit in place of a Yamaha F250 100 hour service kit. While both kits may contain some similar items such as oil filters and spark plugs, there are likely differences in other parts such as the fuel filters, water pump impeller, and other components specific to each engine model.

Using the wrong service kit for your Yamaha outboard engine can result in improper maintenance or even damage to your engine. It is important to always use the correct service kit that is designed specifically for your engine model and year. If you are unsure which service kit is right for your Yamaha outboard engine, it is best to consult with a qualified mechanic or refer to the owner's manual for guidance.

How do I find Yamaha outboard mechanics near me?

There are several ways to find Yamaha outboard mechanics near you. One way is to use Yamaha's official website and search for authorized Yamaha outboard service centers in your area. You can also try searching online directories or forums for marine mechanics or boat repair shops that specialize in Yamaha outboard engines. Additionally, asking for recommendations from fellow boaters or local boating communities can also be helpful in finding experienced and reliable Yamaha outboard mechanic near you. Once you have a list of potential mechanics, be sure to research their qualifications, experience, and customer reviews before making a decision. This can help ensure that you choose a mechanic who is knowledgeable and trustworthy when it comes to servicing your Yamaha outboard engine.

What comes with Yamaha service kits?

Also known as a Yamaha outboard maintenance kit, Yamaha offers various service kits for their outboard motors that include a range of items needed for regular maintenance or servicing. While the contents of a Yamaha service kit can vary depending on the outboard motor model and type of service needed, common items that may be included are a new oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, gearcase lubricant, water pump impeller, and gaskets or o-rings. These items are necessary for keeping the engine running smoothly, efficiently, and reliably. To determine which service kit is appropriate for your outboard motor or what maintenance items it requires, consult the owner's, service manual, or a Yamaha service representative.

What does Yamaha OBM stand for?

Yamaha Outboard Motor (OBM) refers to the company's range of marine engines designed to power boats, including a variety of models with different features, sizes, and power outputs to meet the needs of various boating applications.

What's the average Yamaha 20 hour service cost for outboard motor maintenance?

The cost of a Yamaha 20-hour service for outboard motor maintenance can vary depending on factors such as location, the specific model of the engine, and the service provider. The 20-hour service is typically an important milestone in the maintenance schedule of a new Yamaha outboard engine, and it involves checking and adjusting various systems and components to ensure that the engine is functioning correctly and efficiently.

As a rough estimate, the cost of a 20-hour service for a Yamaha outboard engine could range from $200 to $400 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. This cost may include labor (not applicable for DIY Yamaha outboard repair), Yamaha parts replacement, and any necessary fluids or lubricants.

Is the 20 hour service Yamaha outboard experts recommend optional?

No, unless you don’t want warranty protection or a functional motor!

The Yamaha outboard 20 hour service is an important part of the recommended maintenance schedule for new engines. It is typically included in the manufacturer's warranty and is designed to ensure that the engine is functioning correctly and efficiently during the initial break-in period.

While the 20-hour service is not mandatory, Yamaha strongly recommends that owners follow the recommended maintenance schedule to ensure the engine's longevity and optimal performance. Neglecting maintenance can result in reduced efficiency, increased fuel consumption, and potential damage to the engine that may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

What's the cost of a 100 hour service Yamaha outboard motors require?

The cost of a 100 hour service Yamaha recommends for their line of outboard motors can vary depending on several factors, such as the model of the engine, the service provider, and the specific maintenance tasks required.

As a rough estimate, the cost of a Yamaha 100 hour service can range from $500 to $1,000 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. This cost may include labor, replacement parts, and any necessary fluids or lubricants.

To reduce your overall Yamaha outboard 100 hour service cost, using a 100 hour service kit can be performed by most DIY boaters that want to perform their regular maintenance without expensive labor costs from a certified Yamaha mechanic. With outboard repairs typically starting at $80/hr, you can cut down your costs to have all the genuine OEM Yamaha parts on hand - all available from PartsVu!
