How to Find Your Mercury Boat Engine Serial Number

Where is the serial number on a Mercury outboard?

For most Mercury outboard engines 8hp and higher, the serial number is located halfway down the transom bracket on the right (starboard) side, just below the powerhead. On 6hp and smaller engines, it's found on top of the swivel bracket.

Many boaters take a quick photo of their serial number with their phone—this simple habit can save hours of troubleshooting when ordering parts.

We highly recommend you take a picture of your ESN tag and keep the photo on your mobile phone in case the tag becomes unreadable or if you need this information when you’re not near your boat.

What About a Mercruiser Serial Number?

On a Mercruiser sterndrive or inboard engine, typically, the tag is on the block near the starter. But, sometimes, it's down by the starter on the engine block, near the flywheel, or on the flame arrestor.

All too often, the ESN tag on a Mercruiser is not the easiest to find, so definitely take a picture and save it on your cell phone.

Why Do You Need to Know Your Mercury Serial Number?

mercury outboard serial number lookup - righthand side of engine shaft
The placement of the Mercury serial number label varies a bit from engine to engine. However, it is typically located on the righthand side of the engine.

Simply put, your Mercury serial number will allow you to identify and order the right parts for your engine model and year.

Mercury manufactures many, many different models and often variations of each model. While one thermostat might be the proper selection for some variations of a given engine model, there’s no guarantee that it will be compatible will all variations of that engine—knowing your Mercury serial number is the key.

As if matters weren’t confusing enough, sometimes Mercury will change an engine model design midway thru a given engine model year.

Therefore, Mercury Marine parts are often segmented by serial number ranges. Knowing your serial number will allow you to make sure that you are ordering the right parts, whether you are utilizing a Mercury engine schematic/Mercury outboard parts diagrams, the Mercury parts library, the complete list of Mercruiser parts library, or other resources.

John ,

I was wondering if you could help me identify my motor. It has a cowl that says 90hp, but the back plate says 75hp.
The serial number is 0A741143

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

Thanks for reaching out! Based on the serial number you provided (0A741143), your motor is actually a 90ELPTO model, which is a 90 horsepower engine. The discrepancy between the cowl (which says 90hp) and the back plate (which says 75hp) may be due to different markings used on various components or possibly a previous modification. This motor was manufactured in 1988 and is listed as a Canada model, which sometimes limits the information available, especially for models sold outside of North America. I hope this clears things up! If you have any other questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. Wishing you a great day and happy boating!

Best regards, Markine D

PartsVu replied:
Hi Jim, Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the serial number 1F10462EK you provided doesn’t appear to produce any immediate results in our lookup system. It’s possible that there may be an issue with how the number was entered, or it may be from a series that’s harder to cross-reference. If you’d like, you can take a clear picture of the serial number plate and send it to us at partsvu@partsvu.com. The serial number plate can typically be found on the mounting bracket or inside the top cowling of your motor. This way, we can make sure we have the correct number and provide you with the most accurate information. Based on the format of the serial number you’ve given, Mercury outboards starting with “1F” are typically from the 1999 model year, but we’d need to confirm if the serial number you provided is valid to be sure. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we hope this helps! Best regards, Markine D.
