Mercury Inflatable Boat Parts and Accessories FAQs

How many life jackets are required on a boat?

So, how many life jackets are required on a recreational boat? The USCG requires that an appropriate, Coast Guard-approved life jacket be kept on board for each person on the boat. By federal law, children under 13 are required to wear their life jacket if the boat is underway unless they’re in an enclosed cabin or below deck. Passengers 13 and older aren’t legally required to wear a life jacket. However, they only work when you wear them. The Coast Guard recommends that all passengers wear their life jackets when the vessel is underway, regardless of age.

Note: State laws vary. It’s always a good idea to check local laws with your state boating safety officials. When boating in an area under the jurisdiction of the Army Corps of Engineers, or a federal, state, or local park authority, laws will likely vary.

If you choose not to wear your life jacket while on board, accessibility is crucial. Wearable PFDs must be readily accessible. That means they can’t be stored in bags, in locked/closed compartments, or have other gear on top of them. In an emergency, it’s critical that your lifejackets be accessible in seconds.

Similarly, throwable PFDs must be immediately available to throw to a person in need.

What are the Differences Between Life Jackets and PFDs?

First, let’s break down the general differences between the terms ‘life jacket,’ ‘life vest,’ and ‘PFD.’ Simply put, all life jackets and life vests are wearable PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices), but not all PFDs are life jackets, vests, or wearable, for that matter. A PFD is simply any device used to help a person stay afloat. This includes ring buoys, buoyant cushions, and inflatable belts. PFD designs include wearable and non-wearable styles, different types, and different performance levels.

How Do PFDs Work?

Standard PFDs use foam to stay afloat, though inflatable and hybrid designs are common as well.

Inflatable PFDs rely on CO2 cylinders. They inflated either manually, by pulling on a string, or automatically through exposure to water. The primary benefit of inflatables is that they tend to be lightweight and less bulky than other options. However, you always run the risk of a malfunction if the inflatable isn’t in proper condition. More on this later.

Regardless of their composition, the function of any PFD is to provide buoyancy if you unexpectedly find yourself in the water. Some are designed to simply assist the user in swimming. Others are designed to flip the wearer upright and allow them to breathe, even if they’re unconscious. Fatigue, injury, cold, or simply being a weak or non-swimmer are all conditions that may necessitate the extra help.

Why should boaters follow safety regulations?

Boating on various waterways is similar to automobiles out on the roads and highways—safety devices are designed to keep people safe. Thousands of accidents occur, many of which have a high probability of injury and a substantial number of cases resulting in death.

Specifically, in 2020 the Coast Guard counted 5,265 recreational boating accidents resulting in 767 deaths, 3,191 injuries, and approximately $62.5 million of property damage. Where the cause of death was known, 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 86% were not wearing a life jacket.

Since most accidents occur unexpectedly, there may not be sufficient time to put on a life jacket, especially when stowed away in a locker. In cases where a person is thrown overboard, it is harder than you think to get them back on board, which can be assisted with proper equipment. Always be sure personal floatation devices (PFDs) are in good and serviceable condition. For extra protection, equip your PFDs with a whistle and emergency light.

What are the safety requirements for life jackets and personal flotation devices?

The best life jacket is the one you will wear, but adults are not required to wear their life jackets at all times. This said, US Coast Guard-approved life jacket is required on board for each person. Lifejacket regulations for children may vary by state; however, in states with no children’s life jacket law, a US Coast Guard interim rule requires children under 13 on moving boats to wear a well-fitting US Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

Lifejackets must be:

  • The appropriate size for the intended user,
  • Suitable for the intended activity,
  • In good and serviceable condition, and
  • US Coast Guard approved to meet carriage requirements.

Additionally, you must have a throwable (a square cushion, also called a Type 4 PFD) onboard if the boat is over 16 feet. A PFD like a ring buoy also meets this requirement.

Finally, for those who like to bring their dog along for the adventure: we recommend suiting up your pup as well. Dog life jackets aren’t a USCG requirement, but they are recommended— especially for certain breeds, such as greyhounds, whippets, dobermans, bulldogs, and many more.

What boat safety equipment should I have on hand?

When out on the water, the only items you have are the ones you bring. People often forget about the possibility of minor injuries, but some additional preparedness will have you ready for anything.

  • Bring a first aid kit along for all outings. This is especially important when fishing.
  • Since the sun reflects off the water, it is wise to consistently apply proper sun protection to make sure you don’t get burned. Sun protective clothing is a smart choice— it provides all-day protection that doesn’t need reapplying. Pro-tip: some sunscreen is toxic for the marine environment and repels fish, who can smell even trace amounts on bait. For any part of your body not covered by UPF clothing, use a sunscreen that’s both reef-safe and fish-friendly.
  • While some boats are simply too large for this to be practical, carrying a paddle or two on board is a good idea in many cases. Even if you can’t paddle all the way back to a marina or dock when your engine goes, you may be able to reach the closest bit of land and wait for help. A good anchor with enough chain will also be helpful.
  • We’ve written extensively on the importance of a VHF radio, but it simply can’t be overstated. Cell phones aren’t enough in many areas, and you’ll be glad to have the security.
  • Be alert to changing conditions on the water and aware of weather that can change quickly. The danger of boating in a storm is no joke!
  • Finally, bring plenty of drinking water for everyone on board to stay hydrated. In the face of unexpected problems, you don’t want to be caught stuck on your boat with an insufficient water supply.

How to pump up a Zodiac boat?

  1. Locate the valve: First, locate the valve on the inflatable boat. The valve is usually located on the side of the boat and is a small plastic or metal piece that can be opened and closed.
  2. Attach the pump: Once you have located the valve, attach the pump to the valve. Most inflatable boat pumps come with different attachments, so make sure you use the one that fits your valve.
  3. Pump up the boat: Start pumping air into the boat. It's important to keep the pump at a consistent angle and to pump steadily to avoid air leaks. The boat will start to take shape as you pump, and it will become more rigid as it fills with air.
  4. Check the pressure: Once the boat is inflated, check the pressure to make sure it is at the recommended level. This information can usually be found on a label near the valve. Overinflating the boat can cause damage, so make sure you don't go over the recommended pressure.

How to patch inflatable boat?

  1. Locate the puncture: First, locate the puncture or tear in the inflatable boat. This may take some searching, so it's important to check the entire surface of the boat.
  2. Clean the area: Once you have located the puncture, clean the area around it with rubbing alcohol or another cleaning solution. This will ensure that the patch will stick properly.
  3. Apply the patch: Apply the patch over the puncture, making sure to press down firmly on all edges to ensure a strong seal. It's important to follow the instructions on the patch kit you are using, as different kits may have different application methods.
  4. Allow to dry: Let the patch dry for the recommended amount of time before using the boat again. This is usually around 24 hours, but again, follow the instructions on your patch kit to ensure a proper seal.

By following these steps, you can easily pump up and patch your inflatable boat, making sure it's ready for your next adventure on the water.
