MerCruiser sterndrives typically use Mercury or Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube to protect gears and bearings from heat, pressure, and water intrusion. Drive oil is commonly changed every 100 hours or once per season by draining from the lower plug and refilling from the bottom until lubricant reaches the upper vent or reservoir.

A MerCruiser Bravo 1 drive should use Mercury/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube or an approved marine-grade equivalent. Most Bravo drives take roughly 2–3 quarts, but the exact amount depends on the drive and reservoir setup, so fill from the bottom until oil reaches the vent or monitor.

A Bravo 3 sterndrive typically requires about 2.5–3 quarts of Mercury/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. Marine-grade gear lube is recommended because Bravo drives operate under high load and need protection against heat, pressure, and possible water intrusion.
