Yamaha Marine Carburetors and Components FAQs

How do I select the right parts for my Yamaha outboard engine?

If you’re looking to repair your motor with the right Yamaha outboard engine parts, it can be a bit difficult to know where to start. Luckily, PartsVu has plenty of resources to steer you in the right direction to find the correct Yamaha Outboard Parts to keep your outboard performing on the water.

In this article, we will take a look at a number of different resources you can use to select the right Yamaha outboards parts, including:

Each resource provides slightly different information for those looking to service their own Yamaha outboard motors.

PartsVu’s Yamaha Outboard Maintenance Parts Charts are designed to help you find the right Yamaha outboard motor parts for your particular engine to perform regularly scheduled maintenance. For Yamaha outboard motors, maintenance needs to be performed after 20 hours for new Yamaha marine motors, then after 100, or 300-hours of service for optimal performance. Geared towards beginners and amateur mechanics, these maintenance parts charts are organized by each model number for Yamaha’s line of 4-stroke engines.

If you’re looking for a specs and capacities resource for your Yamaha outboard engine, PartsVu offers our Yamaha Specs & Capacities Charts. This chart is aimed at professional mechanics and amateur DIYers.

To find the right specification and capacities, simply choose your engine model from a dropdown menu to see a complete list of details that include:

  • Engine oil capacity
  • Gear lube capacity
  • Spark plugs
  • Oil filters

For those looking for even more specific and in-depth information, PartsVu offers Yamaha Outboards Engine Schematics.

By clicking on this link, you will be taken to Yamaha’s Parts Lookup/schematics page. Once there, you will choose the right parts for your Yamaha by searching either by your outboard’s Primary Identification Number (PID) located at the top of this page. or look up your model using a series of dropdown menus on the left side of the page.

Note: The Yamaha Outboards Parts Catalog only pertains to Yamaha models “Sold in the United States Only.”. Also, you may have some difficulty finding older parts that are no longer available from Yamaha.

What are common Yamaha outboard fuel system issues?

One of the most common ways your Yamaha outboard motor will break down is a fuel system failure. Whether you’re experiencing an intermittent bog down, poor performance, or complete engine failure, your fuel system is a common culprit.

  • Ethanol gasoline: Only use premium low-ethanol gasoline for your Yamaha outboard motor. The reason is that ethanol attracts water, causing fuel to dilute through “phase separation.” Additionally, ethanol gasoline can also gunk up fuel lines and fuel system components due to additives used. To help prevent these issues, regularly use a high-quality fuel stabilizer.
  • Fuel lines: Check your Yamaha fuel lines. If you discover any breaks or leaks, you should stop using the engine and make any necessary replacements. Also, take a look at any fuel hoses with an interior liner.
  • Fuel filters: The fuel filter on your Yamaha outboard is designed to catch any debris and contaminants that have entered your fuel system. Regularly replace your fuel filters to keep fuel running freely.
  • Fuel pump: A malfunctioning fuel pump can significantly reduce engine performance and, over time, severely damage other components. If your fuel pump is not working correctly, replace it and any hoses that may have been affected.

Will doing my own maintenance void my Yamaha outboard engine’s warranty?

The short answer is, no. Your Yamaha warranty will not be voided if you perform your own maintenance. But, you do need to understand the difference between maintenance and warranty service work.

Your maintenance can be done by you or anyone you authorize to do it. Actually, if an issue arises from the lack of proper maintenance or service, your warranty will not support that issue.

We strongly advise that you review your owner’s manual maintenance chart or online maintenance schedules to plan the maintenance that needs to be done. However, some procedures should be done by your authorized Yamaha dealership, such as checking valve clearance and inspecting a timing belt.

If you perform your own maintenance, please remember to help protect the environment by properly disposing of oil and other engine fluids. Also, if you need help finding the right Yamaha outboard parts or Yamaha maintenance kit for your specific engine, check out our Yamaha Outboard Parts Library.

What are common Yamaha 4-stroke outboard engine problems

The Yamaha F115 is a great 4-stroke outboard motor that consistently receives high marks for reliability, longevity, and performance.

This is due to the outboard’s 1.8-liter displacement and DOHC/SOHC designs with four valves per cylinder, providing a lighter weight and extraordinary volumetric efficiency. This option is the perfect choice for a mid-sized craft, with lots of bang for your buck. Originally put on the market in 1999, the Yamaha F115 has received a number of upgrades since then, improving the basic design with modern features. This suits both water sports enthusiasts and anglers alike.

Like all outboard motors, Yamaha 115 4-stroke outboard problems are bound to occur through heavy usage and aging of components. Despite its high performance, regular maintenance and servicing are required to keep this outboard motor in the water and out of the shop.

In this article, we will take a look at five of the most common Yamaha 115 4-stroke problems, including:

  1. Faulty head gasket
  2. Bad fuel pump
  3. Clogged fuel injectors
  4. Clogged VST filter
  5. Trim and tilt switch issues

How do I repair my Yamaha outboard’s clogged fuel injector?

To give you an idea of what tasks, tools, and equipment you will need with a DIY project, here’s what’s involved when cleaning your fuel injectors:

  • First, you’ll need to remove the fuel injectors off of the engine, which includes the fuel rails. (Note: There are other methods of cleaning Yamaha outboard your fuel injectors that enable you to perform this repair while the fuel injectors remain on the engine).
  • Carefully remove the rubber O-rings and gaskets from each fuel injector.
  • Once removed, manually clean the injectors with a rag and fuel injector cleaner to remove any surface debris.
  • Next, you will take a length of fuel hose and clamp the fuel injector to one side of the hose.
  • Fill the fuel hose with an ample amount of fuel injector cleaner.
  • On the other side of the hose, you will clamp it to an air compressor to create an imitation of the pressure in the engine and force the fuel injector cleaner through the injector’s nozzle. (Note: There is specialized equipment for this task)
  • Supply power to the injector to allow the air and fuel injector cleaner to move through the nozzle using a battery and a pair of spade connectors
  • Apply air pressure to the hose and quickly tap on the battery to send voltage to the fuel injector, opening and closing it (to simulate its regular function). This enables the fuel injector cleaner to flow through the fuel injector.
  • Repeat the process until each of the fuel injectors have been cleaned.
