A starter assembly (also self-starter, cranking motor, or starter motor) is a device used to rotate (crank) an internal combustion engine so as to initiate the engine's operation under its own power.
A bad outboard starter will produce a clicking noise when initiated. In some situations, repeatedly trying to start the engine might produce success, while others will never get the engine going again without a repair. The recoil starter assembly on an outboard allows the operator to start combustion on the outboard's engine. When the recoil starter system is engaged, the operator can crank the engine by hand and get it going fast enough to start all the internal operating systems on the mower.
