Mercury MerCruiser Parts FAQs
How can I best maintain optimal performance of my MerCruiser lower unit?
Changing the gear lube of your MerCruiser motor is essential for ensuring its longevity and smooth operation. Having the parts and products on hand makes performing this critical maintenance step a breeze, which is why a MerCruiser marine gear lube kit is a smart and convenient way to keep your MerCruiser motor running smoothly for years to come. Here are a few reasons why you should change your oil:
- Increased MerCruiser Lifespan - Your MerCruiser sterndrive engine begins to degrade from the moment it leaves the factory and accelerates through use. This is especially true if your engine is used heavily at high RPMs, allowed to corrode, experiences improper long-term storage, and neglects regular maintenance intervals.
- DIY MerCruiser Repairs Save Time and Money - With little effort over a few hours, you can change your MerCruiser sterndrive oil, replace routine parts, and lube up your engine - all for much less cash and time spent in the local marine mechanic shop.
- Change Your MerCruiser sterndrive Lower Unit Oil - Oil and grease are the primary lubricants that keep your outboard in the water and out of the repair shop. PartsVu.com’s MerCruiser marine gear lube kits ensure you have the right kind of oil for your engine at premium quality.
- Maintain Regular Outboard Service Intervals - MerCruiser sterndrive motors require regular maintenance to stay reliable out on the water and avoid breakdowns. This maintenance must occur after 20 hours of service for new engines, then every 100 hours.
- Convenience - PartsVu.com’s MerCruiser marine gear lube kits have everything you need to perform gear lube changes and help prevent buying the wrong item or compromising on quality. This includes: Mercury brand gear lube, MerCruiser gear lube pump, and MerCruiser sterndrive lower unit drain gaskets. Choose the kit that matches your particular model for the correct oil and MerCruiser parts to get the job done easily.
How do I know if my MerCruiser sterndrive head gasket needs to be repaired?
All MerCruiser head gaskets eventually wear down through usage over time. With exposure to excessive heat, corrosive saltwater, moisture infiltration, and other substances, the integrity of the head gasket will eventually lessen. If a head gasket is not replaced when it begins to fail, water and other contaminants will begin to enter the engine. Once this occurs, the performance of your MerCruiser will be significantly affected and eventually lead to major engine damage.
To avoid this, there are several telltale signs to look out for when it’s time to replace your MerCruiser sterndrive head gasket:
- Holes In the Head Gasket
- Reaching the 4-Year Mark
- Low Pressure in the Cylinders
- Water Coming Out of Spark Plug Holes
- Black Specks, Grime, and Slime in the Cylinders
- Idle Runs Too Slow or Rough
How do I use MerCruiser schematics?
If you’re looking for in-depth information for maintaining and repairing your MerCruiser sterndrive motor, PartsVu offers MerCruiser sterndrives Engine Schematics and our helpful article, “How to Select the Right MerCruiser Parts”.
Start at the Mercury MerCruiser schematics page. Once there, you will choose the right parts for your MerCruiser by searching either by your outboard’s Primary Identification Number (PID) located at the top of this page or look up your model using a series of dropdown menus on the left side of the page.
Is winterizing my MerCruiser sterndrive important?
While it’s always a bit more fun to pull out your boat than to put it away, properly winterizing your MerCruiser sterndrive engine should be mandatory for all experienced boaters. Winterizing helps avoid engine damage and will facilitate a smoother start to the beginning of next season - after all, no one wants to wait to get back on the water!
There are several important steps you should take when storing your MerCruiser lower unit to ensure that it’s properly winterized.
- Flush Your Engine - Thoroughly flush your MerCruiser engine to remove any salt buildup if you are a saltwater boater, or accumulated mud and grime if you are a freshwater boater. Failure to remove this debris from your MerCruiser lower unit leads to corrosion in the engine. And if you’re a saltwater boater, leftover salt crystals in the lower unit can act like sandpaper to your internal engine components.
- Stabilize Your Fuel System - Fuel starts to go bad within 30 days of sitting in your MerCruiser fuel system. It is vital to use a fuel stabilizer like Mercury Quickstor Fuel Stabilizer when your boat will be sitting unused for more than two or three months. Adding the amount of fuel stabilizer directed on the product’s packaging to your fuel—for instance, 1 ounce of Mercury Quickstor Fuel Stabilizer for every 5 gallons of marine fuel ensures proper winterization for more than 3 months.
- Fog Your MerCruiser Engine - Mercury Storage Seal Fogging Oil is a wax-based oil that coats the engine to prevent corrosion.
- Change Out the Lower Unit Oil - It’s recommended by marine mechanics to change your MerCruiser gear lube before storage to make sure that there is no water in the lower unit’s oil. Any water in the oil could freeze, expand, and crack your lower unit. Additionally, old oil is more likely to gum up oil passages and corrode components due to changes in its chemical composition through regular use. Last, consult your MerCruiser owners manual for which oil is appropriate for your engine.
- Disconnect Your Battery - Disconnect your battery and spray CRC Marine Battery Terminal Cleaner on your battery terminals.
How do I prepare my MerCruiser sterndrive motor at the start of a new season?
After the cold season is finally over, it’s time to break out your MerCruiser sterndrive motor again. However, there are a few tasks you’ll need to perform before putting your outboard back in the water for optimal performance:
- Uncover & Unwrap - Before you fold up your engine cover and store it in a trash bag, the engine cover fabric itself should be cleaned. To do so, use a soft brush and a canvas-friendly cleaner like StarBrite Sail & Canvas cleaner.
- Perform a Complete Walk-Around Inspection - With the cover off the boat, the next step in MerCruiser season breakout is to perform a walk-around inspection. Check for any leaks under the boat, specifically below the engine. Gear lube, engine oil, trim fluid, and gasoline are possible causes for any leaks or stains. Also, trust your gut - if something seems different than when you stored it, take a look to determine if any damage occurred.
- Protect Your Boat from Harmful UV Rays - UV rays can degrade your boat’s shine and even cause damage given enough time. Consider applying a coat of wax to protect your boat from UV rays. If you noticed your hull has a chalky appearance, applying a polishing compound before waxing brings out a bright, attractive shine.
- Battery & Electrical System Assessment - If you removed or disconnected your batteries for storage during the offseason, it’s time to reconnect them. Before you do, visually inspect batteries for evidence of any physical deformation, leakage, corrosion, and age, especially around the terminals.
- Inspect the Bilge Pumps, Float Switches & Fresh Water Systems - Float switches and bilge pumps are critical safety gear that is absolutely essential for worry-free boating in the new season. Properly wired float switches should function with or without the battery switch being turned on, so be sure to check both ways. Most boats are also wired so that the operator can manually toggle the bilge pump on. Check to see if the pump runs properly and that your bilge wiring, discharge hose, hose clamps, and thru-hull fitting are all in great shape. If your boat’s freshwater system was winterized, be sure to fill your tanks and flush antifreeze from the system, and dispose of it per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Consider a product like Spring Fresh to flush the freshwater system and clean the lines of any remaining antifreeze.
