Selecting & Installing M-Y Wedge Transom Supports
M-Y Wedge transom supports are simple, yet incredibly clever devices designed to eliminate “trailer shock.” Ultimately, the M-Y Wedge provides safe highway transport of outboard-powered boats by preventing the outboard from returning to its vertical alignment which strains the trim and tilt system, stresses the boat’s transom, and can cause tremendous engine damage if contact is made with the road surface.
M-Y Wedge transom supports are made in the USA and is constructed with high-quality materials – specifically EPDM rubber and high-tech plastic. These materials are heat resistant, UV ray resistant, and weather resistant in general.
Universal in nature, the M-Y Wedge models can be used on practically any outboard with a power trim and tilt system. These include Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Honda, and Johnson/Evinrude.
Which M-Y Wedge Transom Support do You Need for Your Outboard?
3 Ram Trim & Tilt System
If your outboard has a 3 ram trim and tilt system, you will want to order the M-Y Wedge 3 Ram transom support. How can you tell if you have a 3 ram trim and tilt system? These systems are characterized by 2 trim rams and 1 tilt ram as shown below.
Single Ram Trim & Tilt System
Most single ram trim and tilt systems are found on Mercury outboards as well as Yamaha outboards from 9-90 HP and the new Yamaha F115 XB, LB & JB models produced in 2014 and newer. The singe ram is one ram that is attached to the outboard at the top and the cylinder reservoir at the bottom, as depicted in the image below. For single ram outboards, you will order the M-Y Wedge Single Ram Universal support,
Installing Your M-Y Wedge Transom Support Is Simple
3 Ram Trim & Tilt System
The M-Y Wedge 3 Ram support 3 Ram support simply slides over one of the trim rams. If using with a Yamaha outboard, you will want to be sure to install the support over the port trim ram as to not interfere with a permanent Zerk fitting. Once installed, the motor is then trimmed down until snuggly pressed against the M-Y Wedge support and the support is slightly compressed. After the outboard is tilted down against the support, there will be little movement in the trim and tilt, and stress is removed from the boat’s transom.
Single Ram Trim & Tilt System
The Single Ram Universal M-Y Wedge is a support with a slit in the middle that slides around that single ram. The solid end of the support needs to face the bow of the boat so that it does not come off when you are trailering. The motor is trimmed down on top of the support until the support is firmly compressed. The support allows for much less strain on your trim and tilt system and greatly reduces strain on the boat’s transom.
M-Y Wedge supports are simple to install and will save a great deal of wear and tear on your outboard's trim and tilt system as well as your boat's transom. I purchased a My-Wedge for my 90hp Yamaha to relieve the pressure and impact on the tilt ram while towing. However, the My-Wedge does not support the full engine weight on it’s own. As I trimmed down the drive, the My-Wedge compresses until it deforms and looses it’s structural integrity. It seems the My-Wedge provides only marginal benefit if the trim ram must still be engaged to support the engine while towing. What am I missing here?
Dean, I’m sorry for the delay in replying to your comment. I have passed your question along to our support team and you will hear from them shortly.
