A propeller hub is a device to which a propeller is mounted. Typically made of a metal or composite material, the propeller hub contains threaded inserts to secure the mounting bolts running through the propeller; the hub also may have a threaded shaft and key way to which the propeller affixes.
Browse our Propeller Hub Kits catalog. Here's a quick look at the evolution of prop hubs, the vital assembly that connects an engine's propeller to its drive shaft and simultaneously acts as a shock absorber should a prop strike an underwater object. Hub kits are designed to be reusable even after most propeller impacts, eliminating the need to replace the hub system when replacing a damaged propeller. Mercury props typically have a fixed hub, so it only fits a specific group of motors (proper shaft splines and hub size) and there is no hub to change. Prop hub replacement cost is often anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on your engine and where you take it. Fixing the prop requires pressing out the old hub and replacing it with a new hub. Propeller hubs are an integral part of the full marine propulsion system The engines transfer torque to the marine propeller shaft which carries the rotational motion to a structure known as the propeller hub. The hub rotates through its casing and further powers the propeller blades. The propeller blades are bolted to the propeller crank disk which is connected to the pitch setting mechanism inside the hub. The propeller hub is designed to protect the lower-unit gears from impact, but it can fail due to age, heat or impact.
