T-H Marine Batteries and Electrical Components FAQs

How do I store and maintain my T-H Marine boat battery?

Once everything is completely dry, the next boat storage best practice involves disconnecting your batteries.

First, safely disconnect the batteries by removing the negative terminal and then the positive terminal. Use plastic caps on the exposed fasteners to prevent electrocution when dealing with multiple batteries.

Next, with the terminals exposed, you want to ensure that the batteries are completely clean of any corrosion, which can damage a battery’s ability to hold a charge after storage. Corrosion on batteries can be brown, white, or blue/green and must be scraped away with a wire brush to expose the fresh metal. Once scraped, coat them in vaseline or WD40 to avoid corrosion. Apply terminal caps and secure the batteries in a dry space.

After the terminals, check all cables for any signs of wear or damage from use. Damage can include frayed wires, burned insulation, or even a burnt smell. It may require examining your entire electrical system for shorts if you discover this.

How do I store my T-H Marine battery during the off season?

It’s important to disconnect your battery during storage, as the battery will drain if it remains connected and affects the longevity of reliable use. A battery that remains connected will often corrode on the terminals and may even rupture, spilling corrosive sulphuric acid around the battery compartment and cables. Also, if you leave your battery connected, your boat’s electronics will pull small amounts of power from the battery, and your battery will most likely be dead by spring.

How to Disconnect the Battery:

  1. Remove the negative terminal of the battery with a matching ratchet set, then remove the positive terminal in the same fashion.
  1. Disconnect the battery cables.
  1. Spray the battery terminals with terminal cleaner and gently scrape away any corrosion on the battery terminals with a wire brush.
  1. Coat the battery terminals with vaseline or WD40 to protect against corrosion. Then secure the battery caps.
  1. Store your battery in a dry place until next season.

How do I prevent battery corrosion?

In general, there are three things you can do to help prevent your T-H Marine battery from corroding.

  1. Keep Track of Your Driving Practices: When you leave your engine inactive for long periods of time, your battery will gradually lose its charge, which can lead to corrosion. If you’re storing your battery over winter, we encourage you to disconnect it and store it somewhere safe and dry. If there are long gaps between taking your boat out on the water, we also recommend disconnecting your battery between uses. Additionally, don’t leave battery-consuming components hooked up to your battery when the engine isn’t running.
  2. Troubleshooting Your Battery: If you notice corrosion forming on your battery terminals, the issue could be either overcharging or discharging. The way to determine whether your T-H Marine battery is being overcharged or discharged is by determining which terminal is exhibiting the corrosion. If the positive (red) terminal is corroded, overcharging may be the issue, while corrosion of the negative (black) terminal typically signals discharging. If it isn’t obvious which terminal is contributing to the corrosion, make sure your terminals are nice and tight. Also, always make sure to periodically clean your terminals to prevent corrosion.

Keep your T-H Marine Battery Terminals Clean: Periodically cleaning your battery terminals is a proven effective method for helping prevent corrosion from forming. To begin, carefully loosen and remove your terminals. Once the terminals have been removed and you’ve ensured that there is no electrical charge, begin cleaning the terminals. There are several products available for cleaning your T-H Marine battery terminals. PartsVu offers battery cleaners like this CRC battery cleaner with acid indicator. Once you’ve cleaned your terminals, apply a terminal protector, like this CRC marine battery terminal protector to prolong battery life and prevent future corrosion from forming.

How do I take care of my battery in cold weather?

During the winter, keep you batteries charged, and the boat plugged in. We understand that many boats don’t have that many batteries, but battery issues can cut a day short or even prevent the day from happening. A bad battery can do more than just not work. It can cause all kinds of weird electrical issues, leaving you to believe “Gremlins” are living in your boat.

If you experience any electrical issues, first check your voltage and then be sure to run a “load test” before ruling out the battery being the cause. Ultimately, if both tests pass, you can assume Gremlins live in your boat.

To help prevent this, first, with lead acid batteries, keep the water level full. Some batteries require distilled water. Keep your batteries on a maintainer and/or charger to keep them warm and keep them from freezing, expanding, or whatever else can happen in those tiny power plants.

How does the T-H Marine Eliminator install?

Installation is simple: remove your existing prop nut and washer, then hand-tighten the Eliminator so that it is firmly pressed against the face of the prop. There is a gasket on the back of the Eliminator that will expand in time, so be sure to not overtighten.

Will the Eliminator fit on my trolling motor?

The Eliminator prop nut fits Minn Kota trolling motors above 80lbs using our GFEL-MK-** part numbers, Minn Kota trolling motors below 80lbs using our GFEL-MKS-*** part numbers, and Motorguide using our GFEL-MG-** part numbers. NOTE: This does not include aftermarket props used on these trolling motors -- we can only guarantee that our Eliminator is manufactured to fit props made by the respective manufacturer of the trolling motor.

There is a yellow mineral-type build up on my Eliminator -- what causes this?

This is caused by electrolysis. To reduce weight and maximize noise reduction, we use aluminum for this piece and, if electrolysis occurs in your boat, the first place it will show is the softest metal, which is typically aluminum.

If you notice this on your Eliminator, take your boat to your local dealership immediately for assistance. We will not replace eliminator prop nuts that have been damaged due to electrolysis.

Why should I winterize my outboard motor?

Winterizing your outboard motor involves performing essential maintenance tasks to avoid moderate to severe engine damage and ensure a smooth start next season. Luckily, most boaters can save plenty of cash and headaches by learning how to winterize a 4-stroke outboard motor themselves.

Flushing your outboard motor is essential to remove any corrosion-causing elements that reduce performance and shaves off years of reliability. For saltwater boaters, this means saltwater and deposits left after evaporation. For freshwater boaters, mud and grime can also cause significant corrosion.

If you fail to remove this debris before winterization, it can wreak havoc on your engine. As the metal becomes oxidized by air’s moisture, this debris penetrates further and further into the engine. Over a matter of weeks, a loss of metal causes pitting, leaks, and affects the precision tolerances for your motor. If your outboard sits with this type of corrosion for months, expect a significant engine overhaul to use your motor next season.
