Yamaha 4-Stroke Application Trim Tabs

The 4-stroke application trim tab anode is a sacrificial metal piece that serves two purposes: to counteract the side force of the rotating prop on boats that are not equipped with power steering and to prevent corrosion from water and stray current to erode the drive/prop.

Yamaha 4-stroke application trim tabs provide lift in order to compensate for changes in speed, weight distribution, and water conditions. When they are deflected downward, the water force on the trim tab creates upward pressure, raising the stern and reducing hull resistance. By making small adjustments on the angle of the Yamaha trim tab you deflect some of the thrust from the prop to the side to overcome motor torque. Virtually every performance boat has trim tabs. Lowering them improves your boat's ride in rough seas because they force down the bow, keeping more running surface in the water. As a rule, choose at least one inch of Yamaha trim tab span (per side) for every foot of boat length. Trim tabs provide the additional lift so that the throttle can be decreased without losing plane, adding both fuel economy and range. Some boaters have experienced as much as 30% fuel efficiency gains.
