The fuel pump provides high-pressure fuel to the injector, which then opens the valve against the spring tension to inject atomized fuel to the cylinder.
The two most widely used fuel feed pumps are diaphragm and plunger-type mechanical pumps. Diaphragm pumps are a type of positive displacement pump. A fuel pump works to supply a definite amount of fuel to all cylinders irrespective of the load at a correct time interval based on the firing order. Sputtering or misfiring is a sign that the fuel pump may be on its way out. When the pump is not providing fuel consistently, you will experience sputtering and may even find that the engine dies while the machine is still in motion. It's similar to running out of a tank of gas.
