Yamaha Outboard Replacement Hard Parts FAQs

How do I select the right Yamaha outboard part for my Yamaha outboard engine?

PartsVu’s Yamaha Outboard Maintenance Parts Charts are designed to help you find the right Yamaha outboards parts for your particular engine to perform regularly scheduled maintenance. For Yamaha outboard motors, maintenance needs to be performed after 20 hours for new motors, then after 100, or 300-hours of service for optimal performance. Geared towards beginners and amateur mechanics, these maintenance parts charts are organized by each model number for Yamaha’s line of 4-stroke engines.

If you’re looking for a specs and capacities resource for your Yamaha outboard,

PartsVu offers our Yamaha Specs & Capacities Charts. This chart is aimed at professional mechanics and amateur DIYers.

To find the right specification and capacities, simply choose your engine model from a dropdown menu to see a complete list of details that include:

  • Engine oil capacity
  • Gear lube capacity
  • Spark plugs
  • Oil filters

For those looking for even more specific and in-depth information, PartsVu offers Yamaha Outboards Engine Schematics

Once there, you will choose the right parts for your Yamaha by searching either by your outboard’s Primary Identification Number (PID) located at the top of this page. or look up your model using a series of dropdown menus on the left side of the page.

Choosing Yamaha branded parts (OEM, or original equipment manufacturer) rather than after-market parts often yields better results. If, for example, you install a defective outboard part and you experience a severe engine malfunction, you may void the warranty and ultimately end up spending much more on repairs in the future. For older Yamaha outboard models that are no longer supported by Yamaha, there are plenty of parts available to fill this gap on PartsVu’s extensive catalog of Yamaha-compatible parts.

How do I use Yamaha outboard schematics?

Looking for even more specific and in-depth information for maintaining or repairing your Yamaha outboard motor? PartsVu offers Yamaha Outboards Engine Schematics. By clicking on this link, you will be taken to Yamaha’s schematics page. Once there, you will choose the right parts for your Yamaha by searching either by your outboard’s Primary Identification Number (PID) located at the top of this page or look up your model using a series of dropdown menus on the left side of the page.

How do I know if my Yamaha outboard head gasket needs to be repaired?

Like most outboard components, Yamaha outboard head gaskets wear down through usage over time. When head gaskets are regularly exposed to excessive heat, corrosive saltwater, and other substances, their integrity will eventually lessen. If a head gasket is not replaced when it begins to fail, water will begin to enter the engine. Once this happens, the performance of your outboard will be significantly affected and eventually lead to major engine damage.

To avoid this, there are several telltale signs to look out for when it’s time to replace your Yamaha outboard head gasket:

  1. Reaching the 4-Year Mark
  2. Low Pressure in the Yamaha outboard Cylinders
  3. Water Coming Out of a Spark Plug Hole
  4. Black Specks, Crud, and Slime in the Cylinder
  5. Idle Runs Too Slow or Rough
  6. Holes In the Head Gasket

What are common Yamaha F115 4-stroke outboard problems?

The Yamaha F115 is an excellent 4-stroke outboard motor that consistently receives high marks for reliability, longevity, and performance. As with all marine outboard motors, with enough continual use and exposure to the elements, Yamaha outboard parts will begin to wear. Because of this, regular maintenance and servicing are required to keep this outboard motor in the water and out of the shop.

The following are 5 of the most common Yamaha F115 4-stroke outboard problems

  1. Faulty Head Gasket - Over time, the head gasket of your Yamaha F115 is regularly exposed to a number of elements that reduce its integrity, such as salt water, heat, fuel, and other substances. Once a head gasket fails, water and other contaminants will enter your engine. When it comes to Yamaha 115 4 stroke problems, replacing the head gasket should be a priority every 4 years of service, or sooner if usage exceeds the average boater (50 hours per season, or 200 hours for 4 years).
  2. Bad Fuel Pump - A bad Yamaha fuel pump is one of the most common problems for Yamaha 115 4-stroke outboards. When the fuel pump finally gives out, your motor is essentially dead in the water until it is fixed. Fortunately, bad outboard fuel pumps are easy to replace and repair. They’re also relatively inexpensive when compared to other necessary engine repairs.
  3. Clogged Fuel Injectors - Over time, carbon build-up clogs fuel injectors and prevents a smooth distribution of fuel. When carbon clogs the fuel injector, your outboard will often misfire, vibrate excessively, and bog down during idle or when the throttle is applied. Cleaning your outboard fuel injectors with fuel injector cleaner keeps clogging from occurring and your Yamaha outboard motor performing at its best.
  4. Clogged VST Filter - Regularly replacing your Yamaha 115 4-stroke’s VST filter prevents clogging. There are plenty of kits to help clean and/or replace your VST filter for proper fuel system maintenance. If this service isn’t performed regularly, your Yamaha outboard engine may require a more time-intensive and expensive repair.
  5. Trim and Tilt Problems - A faulty trim and tilt switch can prevent you from the fine-tuning (trim) and dramatic changes (tilt) needed for optimal performance of your Yamaha F115. Luckily, you can avoid these problems by swapping out the trim and tilt switch on your Yamaha outboard motor.

Will doing my own maintenance void my Yamaha outboard engine warranty?

Will doing my own maintenance void my Yamaha outboard warranty? The short answer is, no. Your Yamaha warranty will not be voided if you perform your own maintenance. But, you do need to understand the difference between maintenance and warranty service work.

Your maintenance can be done by you or anyone you authorize to do it. Actually, if an issue arises from the lack of proper Yamaha maintenance or service, your warranty will not support that issue.

We strongly advise that you review your owner’s manual maintenance chart or online maintenance schedules to plan the maintenance that needs to be done. However, some procedures should be done by your authorized Yamaha dealership, such as checking valve clearance and inspecting a timing belt.

If you perform your own maintenance, please remember to help protect the environment by properly disposing of oil and other engine fluids. Also, if you need help finding the right Yamaha outboard parts or Yamaha maintenance kit for your specific engine, check out our Yamaha Outboard Parts Library.

While maintenance work can be performed by you or anyone you hire to do the job, only a Yamaha dealer can perform service work covered under your Yamaha limited or extended warranty.

All Yamaha 4-stroke Yamaha outboards for pleasure use come with a limited 3-year warranty. Additionally, Yamaha offers extended warranties through their Y.E.S. extended warranty plans. Like limited warranty work, extended warranty service work must be performed by a Yamaha dealer.

When you purchased your new engine, the Yamaha Dealer filled out the warranty information and Yamaha should have sent you a Factory Warranty Card. Warranty coverage is found on the back of your dealer manual But, if at any time you want to know how much time you have left on your warranty, call the Yamaha Outboard Customer Support line at (866) 894-1626. They will need your Primary Identification Number (PID). If you don’t have your warranty card, you can find the PID number on the port side of your engine.

Additionally, your PID number is all you need if you have a problem covered by your warranty.
